TOYOTA TEAM CEBU TOPS VIOS CUP LEG 1
Toyota Team Cebu City beat more experienced, better funded teams in first leg of Vios Cup
Toyota Team Cebu (TCC) is off to a hot start as it upset experienced teams for the Overall Best Team Award in Leg 1 of Toyota Vios Cup Season 5 at the Clark International Speedway in Clark, Pampanga last April 26 to 28.
TTC garnered 92 points to win the first leg by two points over Team Obengers Balintawak. Toyota San Pablo placed third and Toyota Biskeg was at fourth place.
Team captain Lord Seno led the Cebuano squad in winning Race 2 and finishing second in in the Sporting Class.
“We won only by two points. They had faster lap times and more experienced drivers. They also have bigger funds since Balintawak QC is the biggest dealership in the country,” said Seno.
“Our performance was just enough to get past Team Balintawak Obengers. They are very strong in all the three categories. The heat also was a challenge all throughout the racing weekend. But I guess, it was the same for all, he added.
Bobby Pangilinan and Clive Fermin showed stellar performances to give TCC a boost in points. Fermin won Race 2, while Pangilinan won second place in Race 3 in the Promotional Class.
“A lot of pressure was released after this win and it was not an easy one as Elysee Menorca, the lady driver from Obengers(Balintawak QC) was catching up. I had overheating tires already so I just had to focus on maximizing whatever I had left”, Fermin said.
Ace speedsters Jette Calderon and Sean Velasco earned podium finishes in the stacked field of Super Sporting Class. Calderon won third place in Race 1 and Velasco was at fifth place in Race 2.
Team manager John Velasco said that since the team was formed three years ago, they made a clear goal and that is to win the overall championship by 2018.
“We are on the right track and we will continue to try our best to be on top of things. We appreciate the support of the followers, Toyota Cebu and our Sponsors. Without them, this will just be a dream of ours” he said.
The TTC will be back in on the track for the second leg in Filinvest, Alabang on July 27 to 29. /
It was a first experience and tougher than I thought. I’ve watched him millions of times on TV, but it’s tougher to face him in reality. STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
