DOLE to extend aid to fishermen, farmers
The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) will provide livelihood assistance to farmers and fishermen at P20,000 each.
They will also extend aid to a group of fishermen or famers, depending on their needs.
In a press conference, Director Ma. Karina Trayvilla of Dole’s Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC) said that their livelihood program have three components: livelihood formation, livelihood enhancement and livelihood restoration.
They also provide trainings, tools and raw materials to fishermen and farmers.
“The BWSC crafts policies and programs for the development of our workers with special concerns. We have two big programs under BWSC manage by us but implemented by DOLE regional offices,” Trayvilla said.
In Dumaguete City, Trayvilla said a group of fishermen availed of a P500,000 loan with Dole so they can establish a fishpond.
“They are beneficiaries not only of Dole but also of the Department of Agriculture, Depart- ment of Social Welfare and Development and other agencies,” she said.
Trayvilla said they are giving aid to fishermen and farmers because they are one of the marginalized sectors in the society.
Assistant Secretary Ma. Gloria Abraham Tango, for her part, hopes that the lives of fishermen and farmers improve through the livelihood assistance.
“Once a business of the marginalize sector will grow, it can generate additional employment. The family or community who manage it will have supply chain to make the project sustainable,” she said. /
