SOMETHING FOR MOTHERS ON MOTHER’S DAY

- LUIS A. QUIBRANZA III / Writer VERONIKA HIPOLITO / Illustrator

Sometimes, the perfect gift for your mother on Mother’s Day is to spend time with her. Give her a hug if you’re known to give her a headache for being so pigheaded. Say “yes” to whatever she asks yo to do. For once. Or you could give her something that she can use on a rainy day like cash or a gift certificate.

Or you can clean up your act so she can finally be proud of the human being she carried inside her for nine months.

Today is Mother’s Day. Some children are scrambling for gift ideas; some are ready to present their humble offering: buffets, bouquets—you name it—there are several more routes one could take when it comes to finding that perfect gift that would delight a mother.

But just as a mother’s love for her children is timeless, shouldn’t also one’s gifts be rooted in the idea of lasting a lifetime? After the material surprises have been given today, try to impress your mother with these no-fail heartwarmers:

Moments

Ever hear people say that the best gift you can give one person is the gift of time? Well, that’s right. Moms go crazy for moments. Go take your mom out on a date once a week. Create opportunities within your lifetime to carve special moments that both of you share. Be creative. Surprise her.

Obedience

There are blessings for obedience and curses for children with heads harder than vibranium. When you start doing this right? Your fancy gifts on Mother’s Day turn like icing on cake. Obedience is the currency to a longer life for both you and your mom.

Treasure

Moms are humans. And psychologically speaking, material rewards go a long way in encouraging a spent mom after an entire day of work. Call it cash, call it gift certificates, call it whatever. A little piece of treasure every now and then would make her smile (or she might even save it for a family vacation).

Hugs

In maintaining the healthy condition of human relationships, the sense of touch is underrated. You’d be surprised how far a hug goes to encourage your mom for doing a job well done. Generally speaking, a hug makes a person secure, and that’s a nice feeling to have.

Excellence

Have you ever heard your mom rant about you not cleaning your room or not doing the house chores? Well, it’s time to clean up your act and be an excellent human being primed to live a life of excellence. You’re going to make your mother proud when she sees you’ve turned out to be a great person.

Respect

Respect is not freely given but is earned. It’s tough for some children to respect some individuals—mothers included. But one cannot escape the fact that you are her flesh and blood, a divine blessing you carry with you for your entire life. Be humble. Maybe one day, you’ll know how it feels to be a parent, too!
