Osmeña mulls paying loaders based on their output

-

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will consider making the monthly allowance of barangay garbage loaders output-based.

The recommendation was made by incoming City Environment and Natural Resources Office head Nida Cabrera to strengthen enforcement of the “no segregation, no collection” policy.

The loaders receive a monthly allowance of P4,000 from City Hall.

Earlier, Cabrera said several garbage loaders are not serious about implementing the policy and have been only collecting once a day in the barangays.

If this continues, Cabrera said the city’s concerns on garbage will become a recurring problem.

“They only collect once a day and there are some sitios whose garbage are not collected. So even if the residents follow the law on waste segregation, if your collection system fails, the garbage will end up not segregated. We will not be able to solve the problem,” she said.

In his news conference yesterday, Osmeña said he is willing to try it, but it should not be made city-wide immediately.

“Why don’t we try it in a small scale? Try first a little bit and if it works well, we’ll expand it. And if it really works well, everybody likes it, let’s do it,” he said.

Osmeña said several City Hall programs that started as an experiment have become successful, such as the Long Life Medical Assistance Program and the Mayor’s Management Team.
