More than 3,000 barangay captains and officials in Region 7 took their oath before President Rodrigo Duterte at Hoopsdome in Barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City last night.

Duterte, who attended the inauguration of the Mactan Cebu International Airport’s Terminal 2, arrived at Hoopsdome around 7 p.m.

In his speech, Duterte asked the barangay officials to help his administration in the fight against illegal drugs.

He also challenged them to be responsible, uphold their mandate, and do their share in the government’s war on drugs.

“Kung barangay captain ka and you act in the performance of your duty, back-upan tika. You will never go to jail,” he said.

“Magtinabangay lang ta. You have to control drugs,” he added.

He also reiterated that corrupt public officials and those who are into illegal drug activities have no place in government and his administration.

“Huwag sa panahon nga Presidente ko. Away gyud (ta),” he said.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año, who was one of the guest speakers, said the newly elected barangay officials are lucky to be taking their oath before Duterte.

“First time in the history of the country that a President will preside the oathtaking ceremony,” he said.

Signal

Despite being not allied with PDP-Laban, Cebu City Mayor ToInmates mas Osmeña gave a go-signal to elected barangay officials identified with Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) to join and take oath before the President yesterday.

Cebu City Barangay Affairs Office head Feliz Jose Lazarte said the mayor allowed the barangay captains to join the mass oathtaking after the Department of Interior and Local Government 7 issued a memorandum requiring them to attend the event.

“The mayor gave clearance since it was required by DILG,” he said.

Barangay captains from the opposition who are identified with PDP-Laban also attended the event.

Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) President and Tisa Barangay Captain Philip Zafra said all Barug Team Rama barangay captains joined the oathtaking ceremony.

“Even if we already took our oath earlier but by having the President himself as the one who will facilitate the oathtaking, we will really do it again,” he said. /
