I’m glad that Filipino brands are getting more recognition now in the beauty department, instead of sadly being thought of as inferior compared to something imported. In beauty, especially, there are now more excellent options than ever by local brands. Here are a few of my favorite local finds:

* Faith Hope Love Oatmeal Avocado Soap

This little bar of soap is full of vegan goodness. Oatmeal soothes skin and reduces redness; virgin coconut conditions and strengthens; and sweet almond oil, avocado oil and shea butter naturally moisturize. During the summer when my face felt particularly gross with makeup, oil and sweat, all simmering in 32°C tropical heat, I felt like my regular facial wash wasn’t cleaning everything off well enough. I hardly use bar soap on my face, but decided to try this since it’s natural. After one wash, my skin felt clean to my OC satisfaction, but not dry. With continued use over a few weeks, skin is smoother and more radiant, thanks to this P98 product.

* Skinpotions Lip Cake lipstick

This creamy lipstick with a matte finish contains pomegranate and sunflower oils to keep lips smooth and hydrated. Every swipe delivers great pigmentation without a heavy feel. Mocha Cake is probably one of my all-time favorite lipsticks (which is saying a lot, considering the hundreds I’ve tested over the years!). The flattering color, formula and wear are everything I want in an everyday lipstick. Banofee Pie is a beautiful brownish red that isn’t over the top for daytime, but I find this shade less creamy than Mocha Cake.

* Human Nature Healthy Lotion in Berry Bliss If you are hesitant about applying too many chemicals on your body, this 100 percent natural lotion is a good affordable option. It’s enriched with 12 nutrients including coconut, aloe vera and soybean to nourish the skin, without mineral oil, silicone or other synthetic ingredients. You only need a small amount for each use, and it’s not at all sticky even when I used it at the height of summer. I love the scent, too; a little sweet but soft, not sugary. Instructions on the bottle say: “Hum a happy tune while slathering a healthy dose all over your body.” How cute is that?
