Son of town fish vendors wins SKF presidency
An 18-year-old son of fish vendors from Malabuyoc was elected as the new Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation president of Cebu Province yesterday.
Jeriko Rubio, newly elected SK president of Barangay Sto. Niño, defeated Charice Managaytay of Pinamungajan town with 35 votes.
Rubio is the nephew of defeated Malabuyoc mayoral candidate Erlinda Piedad.
Following the result of yesterday’s election, Rubio will serve as the third ex-officio member of the Cebu Provincial Board starting July 1.
Serving as Rubio’s vice president is Ian Arioja of Compostela town.
Mandaue City SK President Dallie Cabatingan was elected as SKF secretary; Aia Apostol of Badian as treasurer; Leo Biñondo of Santander as auditor; Tracy Ursal of Medellin as public relations officer; and Laurence Quijano of Carcar City and Rebelito Tapdasan of Tuburan as sergeant-atarms.
In an interview yesterday, Rubio admitted he lacks experience in local legislation.
But he said he is willing to learn along the way.
He admitted that his parents are not politically inclined, and that it was his older brother who inspired him to get into politics.
His older brother previously served as SK chairman of their village.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Cebu Provincial Director Jerome Gonzales said Rubio and his fellow SK chairpersons will undergo training on local legislation, parliamentary procedure and drafting local ordinances and resolutions.
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III urged the newly elected SK Federation officials to familiarize themselves with the basic laws as they start with their mandates.
During his speech yesterday, Davide told the SK chairpersons to read the 1987 Constitution and Local Government Code as it will guide them in local legislation and basic legal principles.
He also asked them to support the anti-illegal drug program in their barangays.
