Adventure and obstacle races in Cebu

- PIO SOLON piogerardsolon@yahoo.com

On June 16, Cebu will host the Spartan Race at the Foressa Trails in Gaas, Balamban, Cebu. There are going to be several categories: the Sprint, composed of six kilometers and 20-plus obstacles, the Hurricane Heat which is a team event—teams are assigned there—and the Kids’ Race. Why are obstacle races getting more popular?

I think we people are looking for more variety in our fitness, and obstacle races present a unique challenge. This is especially true to most people who’ve been in fitness for a long period of time.

What does it take to succeed in obstacle racing?

You will need higher levels of fitness, a combination of strength, specific cardiovascular endurance. But what people neglect are the racing smarts. One can’t just train and compete hard; one has to do it smartly.

To prepare for the Spartan race, you need to be able to run, lift, carry, crawl, pull, carry your weight, and do it consistently in the mud and with slippery hands. Wishing everyone joining the Spartan Race in Cebu the best of luck and great health!

On June 10 to 12, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hosting the Lumbag Laag sa Sugbu, an adventure race similar to the Amazing Race that will take the teams through tourist spots in the South of Cebu doing obstacles and challenges along the way. While not as physically demanding as the Spartan Race, adventure racing requires mental fortitude over a long period of time. The motto slow and steady wins the race rings true, but will be beat by someone who’s fast and steady as well.

Wishing the participants of these races all the best; do remember that your preparation will always show when you compete.
