30 Cebuanos join San Carlos Chess tourney

About 30 Cebuano woodpusher­s are set to compete in the San Carlos City Charter Open Chess Tournament on June 16 to 17 at the Barrio Fiesta Restaurant, Center Mall in Negros Occidental.

The Cebuanos will be represente­d by the likes of National Master Rommel Ganzon, Leonardo Alidani, Edsel Montoya, Arnolito Cadiz, and Anthony Makinano.

The rest of the Cebuanos are Ronald Ganzon, Bryll Arellano, Bonn Tibod, Joel Pacuribot, Christophe­r Tubalado, Reynaldo Flores, Peterson Sia, Michael Pagaran, Jethro Capurino, Mario Mangubat, Erwin Ababat, and Carlos Moreno III, among others.

The two-day tournament organized by San Carlos City Chess Club and supported by the local government unit headed by Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr. will offer hefty cash prizes to the winners in every category.

The Open category champion will win P15,000 cash prize. The rest will be P10,000 for second place, P5,000 for third place, P2,500 for fourth and P1,500 for fifth. Sixth to 10th placers will receive P1,000 each.

The open category competitio­n will have the 8-Round Swiss format with 30 minutes play. The registrati­on fee is P350.

The 16-Under category champion, meanwhile, will receive P5,000 cash prize, while P2,500, P1,500, P1,000 and P700 will go to second to fifth placers, respective­ly. The sixth to 10th placers will get P300 each.

The 16-Under category will use a 7-Round Swiss format with 25 minutes time control. The entry fee is P300.
