Another inmate shot Mandaue City Jail detainee Steve Go, an alleged drug lord, in the middle of a betting game before noon yesterday.

After shooting Go, 40, detainee Cresenciano Heyrana surrendered the gun he used to the jail guard who was on duty, according to a report in the Mandaue City Police Office’s Station 5. Heyrana, 41, hails from Barangay Tawason, Mandaue City. The initial report didn’t say what offense he was in prison for.

He’ll have to answer an additional charge over the death of Go, whom he shot four times in the head.

Jail authorities suspended all visits after the shooting, which took place at 11:30 a.m.

Heyrana claimed that Go had threatened to kill him, said an initial report from SPO3 Ariel Perez, chief investigator of Police Station 5, and JO3 Christopher Delega, an investigator assigned to the Mandaue City Jail’s male dormitory.

Go was in the middle of a game of “hantak” with a few others when he and Heyrana began arguing. While Go watched a coin he had just tossed, Heyrana allegedly grabbed a .38 revolver that had been concealed near a bed.

The gun allegedly belonged to Go.

In the midst of the commotion, some jail personnel managed to bring Go out and to the Mandaue City Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

A Special Weapons and Tactics Team and some operatives from the Regional Special Operations Group were sent to the jail for added security. Jail Warden Supt. Jessie Calumpag was not available for comment.

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) 7 is set to conduct its own inquiry. In an interview, CHR 7 chief investigator Leo Villarino said that a CHR team may visit the Mandaue City Jail today.

“Even if he was a high-value (drug) target, Steve Go should have been protected inside the jail,” Villarino added.

In a surprise inspection last June 15, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology said it found drug paraphernalia, mobile phones, cigarettes, a bladed instrument, and a sex toy in the cell that Go had occupied. Go was facing a case of robbery with homicide, but had also been tagged by the authorities as a suspected drug lord.
