UV stays unbeaten in Partner’s Cup

The University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers displayed their arsenal in a high-scoring 107-96 win over the Casino Active-University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partner’s Cup in the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

UV put up a stellar rally in the third quarter led by Rey Suerte and Gileant Delator, who connived for 20 points in the third, to break the game wide open with a 75-61 lead toward the end of the quarter.

Suerte led UV with 18 points, nine in the third quarter. Jiesel Tarrosa contribute­d 18, Delator added 17, and Josue Segumpan chipped in 15.

UV had enough firepower from a balanced offense the whole game.

Down 43-54 at the half, USJ-R started the third quarter blazing with a 9-0 run, capped off by a steal and a layup by Jaybee Mantilla to bring down the deficit to three, 54-57. But UV’s Delator and Suerte answered with two straight baskets to bring it back up to double digits, 75-61.

UV started the fourth quarter with six unanswered points before USJ-R’s RJ Dinolan and Miguel Gastador answered with a 7-0 run to bring the lead down to nine, 80-89.

Tricky Peromingan made a trey after Dinolan’s drive to get closer, 85-90, with 5:30 remaining. But UV answered with a 7-0 rally to keep the Jaguars at bay, 97-85, with four minutes left. Lassina Coulibaly put the icing on the cake with an emphatic dunk on a fast break, 105-93, with 1:13 left in the game. UV remains unbeaten after two games.

Mantilla had 28 points for USJ-R, which absorbed its third loss in as many games.

In the high school division, the UV Baby Lancers grabbed its second win in three games after beating the USJ-R Baby Jaguars, 95-86. Gabriel Cometa scored a game-high 26 points for the Baby Green Lancers, Andrew Actub contribute­d 18 points, and Joshua Yerro chipped in 12 points. /
