One on One beats Knox Basic, 31-25, to win U15 Division 2 title in CYBL for the second straight year
The One On One Training Camp survived a last-ditch attack from Knox Basic Basketball to win backto-back titles, 31-25, in the Under-15 Division 2 of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) 2018 in the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Gen. Maxilom Ave. Campus Gym.
One on One Training Camp had the lead from the get-go and was ahead 19-11 going to the final quarter before Knox Basic Basketball of Carcar City gave a gallant fight with a 6-0 run in the final two minutes to pull within three, 25-28.
VJ Apas answered for One on One Training Camp, scoring five consecutive points from a 15-foot pull-up jumper and a three-point play from a gutsy drive with seconds left to play.
Apas finished with a gamehigh eight points, while Kent Samson added five for the One One One Training Camp, which had a 14-11 lead at the half and a 5-4 edge after the first quarter.
Veteran coach Edsel Say Vallena said he was happy that the team pulled off the win despite the limited time for practice.
“The team only meets on Saturdays and Sundays, so the game itself serves as our practice. We totally did not expect to win it. We are very happy especially that we captured back-to-back titles,” said Vallena.
“A tournament like this is an exposure for the players. In the past years, we would lose 20 to 30 points but now we were able to win for second straight year. I have seen huge development from my players,” he said.
In the U-15 Division 1, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Team 2 defeated Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), 31-20, in the semifinals. SHS-AdC had the lead from the start and did not look back until the final buzzer.
Uriel Avila top scored for SHSAdC Team 2 with 10 points, while Nichole Cabańero also scored 10 in a losing effort for DBTC.
The University of Visayas (UV) prevented an all-SHS-AdC finals after beating the SHS-AdC Team 1, 42-32, in the other semis match. Denisvee Ryan Sinoy led UV with 10 points.
UV and SHS-AdC Team 2 will battle for the U-15 Division 1 title on Saturday at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Punta Princesa defeated One on One Training Camp, 46-39, in the Under-18 quarterfinals. /
