AQUASTARS SINK PILLARS IN GUV’S CUP

Talisay City uses 15-0 run in fourth quarter to beat Sibonga in Game 1 of South Division finals

A sizzling run to open the fourth quarter was all the Talisay City Aquastars needed to take down the determined Sibonga Pillars in the Game 1 of the South Division Finals of the Governor’s Cup 2018 Inter-Cities/Municipali­ties Basketball Tournament in the Talisay City Sports and Cultural Gym last Wednesday.

The Aquastars took control in the payoff period, scoring 37 points while limiting the Pillars to 10 points for a 93-70 win to take a 1-0 edge in the best-of-three finals series.

Jay Deiparine scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Talisay City’s fourth quarter rampage.

Talisay City had all the gunners clicking in Game 1 as four other players finished in double digits. Ronan Briones had 15 points, Elmer Echavez chipped in 14, Kendrick Abarquez handed 11 and Raffy Bacasmas added 10.

Sibonga was actually leading 60-56 after the third quarter but Talisay City staged a stellar 15-0 run that was ignited by a three-pointer from Deiparine to finally break the game open.

John Bryle Cuyos top scored for Sibonga with 18 points, Christian James Nobleza handed 14, Ehman Ronen Suarez had 12, and John Klarenz Sonsona had 11.

Before the solid fourth quarter, Talisay City had the first taste of the the lead in the first quarter, 20-16. But Sibonga controlled the second quarter to take a 44-37 lead at the half.

Sibonga will host Game 2 at the Sibonga Municipal Gym at 8 p.m. tonight. /
