Governor to move CPDRC inmates to other jails
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide willmeet with officials of big jails in the province to facilitate the transfer of inmates from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) to their facilities.
Davide said the transfer aims to decongest the CPDRC, where the population is close to reaching 4,000.
The plan to transfer some inmates to other jails in Cebu was earlier proposed by newly-installed warden Reynaldo Valmoria to help clear CPDRC.
But Davide admitted it may take some time to convince administrators of big jails in the province, as they are also suffering the same congestion problem.
The Province will have to spend for CPDRC inmates who are transferred to other jails.
“The Province will need to allocate funds for these inmates, especially for their food expenses. These are things that need to be discussed further,” Davide said in Cebuano.
While CPDRC was designed for 1,500 inmates at most, it currently houses 3,910.
Upon his assumption as warden, Valmoria immediately implemented measures to prevent decongestion, such as no longer accepting additional detainees to the CPDRC.
The Cebu Provincial Government is also negotiating with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to transfer some of their inmates to jails in areas where they committed their crimes.
Officials are fast-tracking the transfer of some inmates, particularly those already convicted of their crimes, to national penitentiaries in Manila and Abuyog, Leyte.
