SLOW START, STRONG FINISH

After struggling in the swim part of the race, national duathlon team member Joland Olmilla made up for it and dominated the bike segment, eventually taking the 8080 Sogod Tri title

National duathlon member Joland Olmilla bucked a slow start to win back-to-back titles in the 8080 Sogod Triathlon in Sogod town, northern Cebu last Saturday.

Olmilla completed the 1.9-kilometer swim, 65K bike and 14K run race with a total time of 3 hours, 10 minutes and 16 seconds to win the men’s overall title.

The Rider Omega Triathlon Team member struggled at the start of the race, finishing the swim portion in 27:45. But Olmilla recovered on the bike segment with a time of 1:43:73 before capping off the race with a 57:20 run.

“I had a hard time on the swim segment but I was able to recover on the bike. I took the lead with 20K left in the bike and was on a solo lead until the finish,” Olmilla told SunStar Cebu after the race.

“I am very happy that I won. This year was more difficult because there were a lot of strong triathlete­s who competed,” said Olmilla, who will compete next in the Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championsh­ip next month.

The 2016 overall champion John Philip Dueñas of Motor Ace Racing Team finished second to Olmilla with a time of 3:13:29. Dueñas clocked 27:55 in the swim, 1:48:52 in the bike portion and 54: 39 in the run segment.

John Alcala was third overall with a total time of 3:16:00.

Socorro Arellano won the women’s 8080 overall title in 4:13:53. She finished the swim in 36:22, completed the bike portion in 2:12:04 and the run in 1:21:52.

Casey Uy finished second in 4:27:16 while Marie Flor Justiniane was third at 4:27:27.

Karen Manayon of Rider Omega, on the other hand, clocked 1:43:47 to win the women’s overall title in the 4040 race, which covered 900-meter swim, 32.5K bike and 7K run.

Maria Ivy Kyono placed second in 2:18:28 while Kristine Dave Orbiso came third in 2:19:47.

The men’s 4040 title went to Sousa Justice (1:37:44), Xterra pro Joseph Miller (1:41:27) came second and Renzo Mar Pahaganas (1:44:02) finished third. /
