BASKETBALL / BATANG GILAS TAKES FIRST WIN IN FIBA U17
The Batang Gilas finally bagged its first victory of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup after squeaking past Egypt, 70-69, in a Class 13-16 game last Saturday in the Technological University in Santa Fe, Argentina. After an off night, Kai Sotto put on his best performance of the tournament to lead the Philippines to victory. The 16-year-old 7’1” center exploded for 28 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, dished out two assists, had a steal and two blocks. Gerry Abadiano chipped in 15 markers, while Raven Cortez and Rence Padrigao added 10 each. Aly Khalifa was Egypt’s top performer with 17 points. The Philippines takes on New Zealand at dawn today in Class 13-14 game. The winner will be ranked 13th out of the 16 teams that played in the World Cup. /
