LACION DRUBS SAN FRAN
Consolacion limits San Fran star to 10 points, wins Game 2 to force decider in North Division finals
Consolacion forced a do-or-die Game 3 in the North Division finals of the Governor’s Cup 2018 Basketball Tournament after an 86-61 Game 2 crushing of San Francisco at home last Wednesday night in a jam-packed Consolacion National High School Gym.
“Tonight everybody came in prepared. They executed what we practiced,” said Consolacion head coach Delfin “Jun” Pepito of their win.
The Sarok Weavers came out full of energy with the help of the raucous hometown crowd,. Consolacion forced San Francisco to turn the ball over and successfully contained San Francisco star Kenny Rogers Rocacurva.
“That’s what we focused in practice. To deny him and if brings the ball get some help defense on him,” said Pepito on their defense of Rocacurva.
Rocaurva, who scored 33 points in Game 1, was just held to 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks. A wrist injury on Rocacurva, after driving to the basket in the second quarter also was a huge game changer.
“Rocacurva got in injured and it helped us,” said Pepito.
The game was close in the first half, with Consolacion up ahead, 34-30, at halftime.
But then Emmanuel Villamor found his groove, while Rocacurva was sitting on the bench, nursing his injury.
Villamor sparked an 13-0 run to start the third period to give Consolacion a 47-30 lead. Samuelito Maningo finally stopped the bleeding after scoring San Francisco’s first basket of the period in the 4:59.
It was all Villamor in the third quarter as he poured in 12 points in that quarter alone.
The two teams will face off in the deciding Game 3 tonight at 7 at the Cebu Coliseum. /
