SAYING GOODBYE TO PLASTIC

- DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION: Enrico P. Santisas

If you’ve seen photos of the tons of garbage fished out of our seas or piling up on the streets, you’d know that most of it is composed of plastic.

It’s easy to see why many are pushing for lessening or banning the use of plastic altogether. It won’t be easy to go completely plastic-free, but here are some ways you can reduce the use of plastic.

1. Bring your own water bottle.

We do get thirsty at times and it’s so easy to just pop into a store a buy yourself some water. You can even save money by bringing your own bottle and easily refill it in water refilling stations if you’re not sure about the quality of the tap.

2. Ditch the straws.

It’s nice to sip a cold beverage, but the plastic straws you are using are not necessary, are they? Your drink will still be delicious without it and there will be one less piece of plastic clogging up the drains.

3. Skip the shopping bags.

If your bag is large enough to carry things you’re purchased at the store, there’s really no need to get a plastic bag, especially for very small items. If you’re going on a shopping spree, consider bringing a reusable shopping bag.

4. Stock up on food keepers.

Rather than put your food in plastic sandwich bags or tin foil, having reusable food keepers handy to bring your baon is better. You can wash them right after use and you don’t add to the pollution.

5. Shop wisely.

If there’s an option for a biodegradable box, choose that one over the plastic wrapped item. Opt for a mug when you’re in coffee shop. Pick the store that uses paper packaging instead of plastic.

There are so many ways we can cut our plastic use. While not all of us can go completely plastic-free, we can always do small things that others can follow. S
