-

Aboitiz Construction Inc. received on Friday a safety excellence award from an international engineering organization.

JGC Corp. recognized the company’s safety excellence, pointing out it had attained over 1.5 million safe man-hours without lost time incidents.

Aboitiz Construction is the only contractor from the Philippines that received the award along with five other JGC contractors for ongoing projects in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Indonesia.

“Creating a safety culture starts at the top, with employers who recognize the need for processes that are easy to follow. This is what we practice and consistently implement to ensure that our workers and staff return safely to their homes every day,” said Alberto Ignacio Jr., president and chief operating officer of Aboitiz Construction.

“Practicing safety and being careful costs us nothing but carelessness may cost our lives,” he added.

The award criteria include the total recorded incident rate of close to zero, which is above the acceptable rate of 0.15.

The company’s award was for an ongoing construction project in General Santos City, a 105-megawatt coal-fired power plant where JGC provides engineering, procurement and construction services, with Aboitiz Construction as one of its major subcontractors.

The project started in August 2017 and is expected to be completed in September 2018.

Aboitiz Construction expects a busy year ahead, given accelerated developments in the industrial sector.

The construction arm of the Aboitiz Group’s projects include a petrochemical plant in Bataan, a mining firm, fabrication works for Korean, Japanese, Australian, and local companies, and the biggest Outlets project so far in Lipa City, Batangas.
