Big Bad Wolf

- ELISABETH BAUMGART elisabeth.baumgart@gmail.com

Great things always happen when Senator Manny Pacquiao takes the ring. Crime rates drop, neighborhoods are quieter (except for the occasional cheering and yelling), and traffic congestion magically disappears for a few hours. And of course, it’s always great he wins—let’s not forget that as well.

The time Senator Manny spends in the ring are simply magical. People disappear from the streets and retreat into their homes. The quiet in the usually bustling cities and towns are the best.

If you’re looking to avoid the usual crowds in places you commonly avoid (because, well, of the crowd), the famed Pacquiao fight is the best time to head out into the world.

I made the best use of Senator Manny’s fighting time by heading to the Big Bad Wolf book sale. There were just a handful of people, no pushing around trying to find a book title you like, and paying at the cashier was just a breeze. I was in and out of the Big Bad Wolf within less than two hours—fast and efficient. Thank you, Senator Manny for keeping people at home.

If you haven’t heard about the Big Bad Wolf, and no we are not talking about the one who huffed and puffed and blew the piggy’s house away (though, hey! Childhood favorite!), then you might be living under a rock, or you just have a really bad internet connection.

The Big Bad Wolf book sale is a Malaysian book fair frequently held in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and most recently the Philippines. Earlier this year, the Big Bad Wolf huffed and puffed in Manila, and sold thousands of volumes of books.

The Big Bad Wolf finally made its way to Cebu’s shores and it’s sniffing its way around town. The Malaysian book sale offers discounted books at 60 to 80 percent off, at prices that are every reader’s dream. Naturally, with these attractive prices, everyone had to get their fair share of the Big Bad Wolf.

It came to no surprise that the Big Bad Wolf was packed on its first few days. While I had preview passes to the sale, I later decided not to go to the book fair since there were just way too many people. Like, way.too.many.people.

The sight of so many people out book shopping was just wonderful. I heard that people were complaining that too many people were out buying books. I’m still a bit confused what there was to complain about—people like books, just let them shop! The more people buy books, the more people read, the more we learn, the more we grow as people.

While there is no big Pacquiao fight today to save you from the crowd, today is the last day of the Big Bad Wolf. If you want to get yourself a few good book steals, head on over to the BBW before he huffs and puffs and blows all the books away.

Happy reading, everyone!
