Cadiz bags Cepca July trophy

National master Arnold Cadiz displayed his class as he came out undefeated in five rounds to win the Cebu Executives and Profession­als Chess Associatio­n (Cepca) Monthly Qualifying Tournament July Edition in the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City last Sunday.

Cadiz, a former chess coach of University of San Carlos Basic Education Department, finished with five points after sweeping the 5-Round Swiss System tournament to win the title for July that earned him a slot in the Cepca Grand Finals in December.

The 51-year-old former barangay councilor also pocketed the monthly cash prize of P1,500.

Mario Bustillo finished in second place, national master Rogelio Enriquez Jr. was at third place and Rogel Niño Panilagao was in fourth place. The second to fourth placers received P1,000, P700 and P500, respective­ly.

Cadiz joins the other monthly qualifiers, namely: Eduard dela Torre, Mario Bustillo, Rogelio Enriquez Jr., Joselito Loquez Jr. , Zilberstei­n Torres and Kidd Salazar.

On the other hand, Jethro Ysmael Capariño finished with 4.5 points after six rounds to conquer the 20-Under division of the Cepca Age-Group Chess Tournament also in J Centre Mall last Sunday.

Christian Klent Pondoyo finished second with 4.0 points followed by Adrian Basil Basilgo and Jeremy Rose Bajo with 3.0 and 2.0 points, respective­ly.

Aaron Keife Senining had 5.0 points to win the 16-Under. Rogel Niño Panilagao had 4.0 points for second place followed by Lawrence Anthony Paradela with 3.5 points and Sixto Tumulak III with 3.0 points.

In the 12-Under, Richard Gohetia Jr. earned 6.0 points to beat Nash Misal (5.0), Jesusito Tatoy Jr. (4.0) and Edelyn Vosotros (4.0) for the title. /
