UC Webmasters open season with dominant 22-point win over former champion USC Warriors

-

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters sent a loud and clear message that they are serious about their title hunt, with a dominant showing over the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 72-50, in their first game of the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) in the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

The Webmasters played like a well-oiled machine from the get-go, building an early 22-6 edge after the opening quarter after trailing, 4-0.

The Sanciangko-based school erected a 46-29 lead at the half before going full steam in the third quarter.

UC started the second half with a scoring barrage built on an 11-0 run in the first six minutes of the third.

John Jabello jumped off the run with two free throws followed by Frederick Elombi’s six straight points and Paul Gallinato’s rainbow shot to push UC’s lead to 28 at 57-29.

While UC scored at well, USC had trouble scoring as they went scoreless for nearly seven minutes before Lucky Ecarma ended the USC’s dry spell with a three-pointer. UC, last year’s runner up, enjoyed a 59-36 lead after the third quarter.

The final quarter was a foregone conclusion as the hapless USC failed to make a major fightback. Jabello top scored for UC with 17, Elombi added 15 and Darrell Shane Menina put up 14.

John Saycon and Sonti Managor scored 17 and 11 points, respectively, in a losing effort for the Warriors.

In the high school division, the USC Baby Warriors nipped the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 69-56.

Khadshein Paul Tagalog and Clint Anthony Octaviano combined for 29 points for the Baby Warriors.

The Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons defeated the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers, 71-61. Ivan Dave Ares exploded for 26 points while Nick Galope and Raure Panimdim chipped in 15 and 11 points apiece. /
