Ladon assures PHL bronze

Following two bronze medal victories last Monday, the Philippine­s is guaranteed another bronze medal with boxer Rogen Ladon’s quarterfin­al victory in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.

The 24-year-old Ladon, a silver medalist in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, advanced to the flyweight division semifinals after a close 3-2 points win over Kazakhstan’s Azat Mahmetov. Ladon will take on Thai Tongdee Yuttapong in the semifinals on Friday afternoon.

The Philippine­s still has two more boxers in the running for a medal after Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam won their fights the other night. Paalam outclassed Taiwanese Powei Tu, 5-0, in the Round of 16 of the men’s light flyweight division, while Marcial knocked out pro pug Ng Kuok Kun of Macau in the second round of their Round of 16 bout in the men’s middleweig­ht division.

In athletics, Kristina Marie Knott qualified for the finals in the women’s 200m event after finishing seventh in the semi-finals with a time of 23.65.

Trent Anthony Beram, on the other hand, fell short of a finals appearance after finishing 10th with a time of 21.26 in the semifinals of the men’s 200m event.

The latest medalist from the Philippine­s is Tsukii Junna, who won a bronze medal late Monday night in the women’s -50kg division of Karate. Junna beat Thailand’s Paweena Rakasachar­t, 4-1.

The Philippine­s dropped to 19th place with a total of 15 medals – three golds and 12 bronze medals. /
