After recovering from a hamstring injury, Martchan Torregosa came back stronger and shattered an 11-year-old record in the boys’ athletics of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) track and field competition at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) yesterday.

The 16-year-old Torregosa of the University of Cebu (UC) clocked 51.64 seconds in the boys’ 400-meter dash secondary division to eclipse the 2007 record of 52 by Lindley Fran Navaja.

Ryan Kieth Mendez of University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) took the silver in 54.23 and Kier Ivan Apostol also from USC-BED bagged the bronze in 55:04.

It was the second record broken by Torregosa in a span of five weeks. He first broke the 400m hurdles record in the Milo Little Olympics Visayas Regional Finals about a month ago.

“It’s a nice feeling that I’ve been performing like this. I broke the record in Milo Little Olympics and now in the Cesafi, it really feels great. It’s the result of the hard work in training,” said the former stalwart of Talamban Elementary School. “I can say that my injury made me mentally stronger and hungry to get back,” he said.

UC’s Josie Inemedo won the girls’ title in 1:02.50, beating USCBED’s Mary Joy Loberanis (1:03.11) and Catherine Mayol of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHSAdC) (1:04.13.)

In the college division, Christian Estella of USC and Jay Ann Luaña of University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) conquered the men’s and women’s 400m. /
