Former Cebu City mayor Michael Rama, who wants his name removed from President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of narco-politicians, has tested negative of illegal drug use.
The result of the drug test, administered by the crime laboratory, was released yesterday to the media by the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7.
Rama, who is running for vice mayor in Cebu City in the May 2019 elections, submitted to a drug test before PRO 7 Director Debold Sinas last Friday morning.
Rama, a former ally of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, had repeatedly said he is neither a drug user nor a drug protector.
Rama said his move was the first step in his efforts to clear his name after he was mentioned in public by Duterte as one of the drug protectors in the country two years ago.
PRO 7 Director Debold Sinas said Camp Crame cannot clear civilians or elected officials tagged as drug protectors, but it has an adjudication board that hears and evaluates cases of narco-cops.
The police official, however, said they will evaluate Rama’s records and submit these to Camp Crame.
Before Rama submitted his urine sample, he listened to Sinas discuss the process of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in clearing an officer’s name listed as a drug protector.
Sinas told Rama it is a long process.
In 2016, Rama submitted to a drug test for the first time after he was challenged by Osmeña.
Four local journalists, led by Defense PNP Press Corps president Arnold Bustamante, who volunteered to undergo drug testing on the same day, also tested negative. /
