Awum to raffle 2019 slots
Female long-distance runners will have something to look forward to as the schedule for the 8th edition of the All-Women UltraMarathon (Awum) has been set and will have a new twist.
For the eighth edition of the annual race, the organizers will forgo the usual registration process. Instead of registering, the female runners will be required to join the event’s lottery draw to secure a slot to the race.
“This time it will not be based on who will register first online. We will gather the names and it will be drawn,” tournament director Willie Estepa told SunStar Cebu yesterday.
In the previous years, Awum needed only a few minutes to sell out the limited 300 slots.
The organizers have allocated 350 slots for the 2019 edition. There will be 305 slots available in the draw, 20 slots are reserved for the Top 20 runners last March and another 25 will be reserved for the aid sponsors in the 2018 edition.
The interested runners will pay P100 to enter the lottery, and if selected, the amount will be deducted from the runner’s registration fee. All the proceeds from the non-selected entries will be donated to a charity.
The organizers have yet to select a charity but they want to tap a charity that empowers women in line with one of the race core goals: to celebrate women’s month.
The 2019 Awum, a 50-kilometer ultramarathon exclusive for women, is set on March 9 to 10. The venue is still to be announced.
The entry for the lottery draw will be on Nov. 12 to 17. The draw will be done on Nov. 23 and the successful entrants will be notified within 48 hours of the draw date. /
