Obsession vs. Passion

- NOEMI FETALVERO noemifetalvero@yahoo.com

Events in one’s life, whether marked with obsession or driven by passion, will eventually define how we have managed our lives. Obsession vs. Passion. Both are extreme emotions, difficult to stifle that will either drive us to the path of success or disaster. Merriam-Webster defines “obsession” as an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes a person’s mind. Passion is defined as a strong and barely controllable emotion.

Since we live in this materialistic world, there seems to be no end to our wants. Sometimes, we get so obsessed with getting what we want that we do not realize that our behavior already borders the illegal, if not, immoral zone.

It is rather sad to note that because of some obsession to have the latest gadget or to own the recent fashion brand of bag or shoe, some students of reputable schools have to resort to prostitution or the illegal drug trade. It is difficult keeping up with what is the latest since it has become a marketing strategy by manufacturers to introduce something new. If only these teenagers could reflect on how transitory things are, fixation on material stuff could be channeled to something more of value.

Passion is more on the positive side if controlled or managed right. But someone’s passion to finish the job ahead of time by working long hours, that he is no longer aware of the fact that he is missing the much needed bonding with the family at home? Intervention for time management becomes imperative at this point.

Passion for art and music only confirms statistical reports that painters, sculptors and composers are people who love to be alone. Left to themselves, they are able to maximize their artistic ability. Thanks to Beethoven, Chopin, Vivaldi, Mozart, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso etc. who devoted their passion for art and music, our students of today learn from their legacies.

Why do they call the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, “Passion of the Christ?” It was God’s passion to save mankind. This biblical reminder encompasses so many aspects of our lives.

Politicians have already filed their certificates of candidacy. Visibility is the norm to make their constituents aware of their intention to run for public office. Voters have to be smart to be able to make a good and honest assessment of who is sincere, genuine and worthy to be called a public servant. Try to know what our candidates are obsessed and passionate about.
