The Ironman race

- --Alfredo Acopan

Ibelieve in this Ironman race because we also have it in Hawaii, but it is very organized. There. public roads can’t be blocked because it belongs to the public.

Here in Mactan, Cebu during the last Ironman, roads were blocked from morning to late in the evening, and if you lived there you got caged like an animal.

People there depend on their daily work to sustain their living. Not all of us are rich and we can’t be on the roadside cheering for our friends and runners during the event.

Who benefit the most from this event? We the people who own the road were used together with our public servants for others to earn money. The organizers themselves should shoulder the cost and learn the proper way to run a race like this.

In Hawaii, the Kona Ironman only allows those who pass the qualifying time to enter and only one lane of the roads can be used with traffic cones laid down and retrieved as the racers pass. There are no permanent road blocks.

Two weeks before the event, the road signs on the said activity are posted. Newspapers and radio stations make sure that the public is notified ahead of the event so plans can be made accordingly.

In SunStar Cebu was an advertisement asking people to paticipate in the event but the reality is that not all people have that luxury for we are poor and do not do things that do not put food on the table.

To the organizers, please respect the right of way of the public and manage the race correctly so we can have a harmonious relationship.
