Rooting for Romeo

Is it true that Terrence “Tempestuous” Romeo is now with San Miguel Beer? Amid uncertainty, the latest report is, TNT’s Romeo was traded to the Beermen just before Christmas.

If true, then that’d be a sure boon to San Miguel Beer, whose already formidable back court trio of Chris Ross, Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter would all the more be strengthened with Romeo’s entry.

Only a non-student of basketball would hazard a guess that Romeo is not a marquee player.

But then, what about this report that at least seven of Romeo’s TNT teammates engineered Romeo’s transfer to San Miguel Beer?

That the seven Texters had actually petitioned top-level management to expel Romeo out for conduct inimical to the best interest of the squad?

And MVP (Manuel V. Pangilinan) himself, who owns TNT, NLEx and Meralco in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), had upheld the Screaming Seven’s shoutout, and had to personally take a hand in shipping Romeo to SMB?

If true, that is so shockingly shameful.

In his previous team prior to getting shoved to TNT, Romeo had also reportedly incurred the ire of a key cog in the coaching staff that he almost got himself clobbered.

Only the intervention of cooler heads had saved him from getting beaten black and blue?

There is no question that Romeo is one of the best there is in the game today. He is one of the flashiest guys, if not the flashiest indeed, in the PBA.

His dribbling delights. His drives excite. His shot selections send you harking back, at times, to the magical Michael Jordan era.

But has success come to his head that he thinks he can get away with crime all the time?

If only he could put his temper in check even at 99.99 percent, he can be a force as powerful and as immovable, impregnable, like Aquaman.

If only he could make the letter H his middle initial—H, as in humility. Ah, what a wonder he’d be. Forever.
