The Sinulog Cup
The current board aren’t going all out in spending for their last hurrah because they want the incoming board to have some funds left when they start their term.
This weekend, the Cebu City Sports Center will host the Sinulog Cup almost a month after it hosted the Sinulog festivities. The grand stage is gone of course and fret not. Dakay Construction put up the stage and we all know of course the head of the Cebu Football Association is Ricky Dakay.
I know Sir Ricky likes to stay behind the scenes but I think it’s fitting that his name gets mentioned now. You see, if things go as planned, this will be the last Sinulog Cup that will be staged with him in charge.
I remember in the early years of the tournament, Cebu football had to go through a lot because of the in-fighting. I think at one point the Sinulog Cup was staged together with another tournament and one team suffered the consequences, getting suspended by the local FA.
But that is a thing of the past now. Sir Ricky and the rest of the board made sure of that by not being vindictive when they got control of the board and welcoming those who were in the other side to their fold.
Though the next board will have big shoes to fill, at least they won’t be doing it with empty pockets.
I got to talk to one of the guys in charge of the Sinulog Cup and what he said was very interesting. It is also the best way to describe how the present board works.
The current board aren’t going all out in spending for their last hurrah because they want the incoming board to have some funds left when they start their term. You don’t met BOD members like that every day, heck or every year.
So, in a way the next BOD members are both lucky and unlucky. They’re lucky they’d have some cash left when they start filling up such big shoes.
SPECTATOR CONDUCT. I checked the rules of the tournament and one thing that I liked-and one that could be adopted in others--is that the organizers have the right to stop a game unless spectators of both teams act in sportsmanlike behavior.
I’ve seen games where the parents get loose with insults, which doesn’t help but only adds to the tension.
There were moments that I’d wish the officials would tell the parents off but I knew that wasn’t possible but with this added rule in the tournament, that’s now possible. So I hope the parents behave in the Sinulog Cup. Besides it’s a Sinulog tournament and we all know what the Sinulog is all about.
I just believe that, even today, if I play my best, if Tiger plays his best, it’s good enough to win on any week. PHIL MICKELSON
