BANTAYAN TO HOST 2 MAJOR EVENTS

- BVR On Tour holds second leg in Bantayan, which will also host Governor’s Cup

IT WILL be a busy weekend for Bantayan Island as it hosts the Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) On Tour and the 2019 Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament on March 23 to 24.

Bantayan Island will host the BVR On Tour, a nationwide beach volleyball tournament, for the third time at the pristine beach of Sta. Fe. The competition this weekend will be the second leg of the volleyball series following the opening leg in Puerto Galera last March 9 to 10.

The event will be attended by local and international players with a total of 24 competing teams—12 each in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Puerto Galera men’s division champion Ran Ran Abdilla and Jesse Lopez of Team Air Force will look to duplicate their feat, while women’s champion--Bea Tan and Dij Rodriguez of Negros—will also go for a second straight crown.

The leg one champions are expected to have their hands full as they face formidable contenders from Cebu teams, Bacolod, Russia, and players from National University, University of San Carlos and Southwestern University-Phinma.

The teams will be divided in four brackets and will play a single round-robin elimination round with the Top 2 in every bracket advancing to the quarterfinals. The winners in the knockout quarterfinals will move on to the semifinals.

The BVR On Tour, which is supported by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC), will also hold a beach volleyball clinic.

The clinic will be attended by about 100 elementary and secondary students in Bantayan Island and will be held after the semifinal round on Sunday.

“The CPSC continues to support BVR on Tour because volleyball is one of the most popular sports in Cebu. Beach volleyball is also a major crowd drawer and is in line with our thrust to push sports tourism,” said CPSC Commissioner Nimrod Quiñones.

Aside from the volleyball tournament, CPSC will be bringing in the province-wide grassroots basketball tournament for Under-21 players—the Governor’s Cup.

The basketball action will start at the Madridejos Municipal Gym on Saturday with home team Madridejos (2-0) and Tabogon (2-0) putting their unbeaten record on the line for the chance to gain the solo lead in the 4th District.

It will be followed by the game between Bogo City (1-1) and Tabuelan (1-1), and the clash of winless teams San Remigio (0-3) and Sta. Fe (0-3).

At the Sta. Fe Municipal Gym, Tabogon will play Bogo City, Tabuelan (1-1) battles Medellin (2-0) and Santa Fe takes on Madridejos on Sunday. /
