‘MISSION ACCOMPLISHED’
Provincial Sports Commission lauds participants, level of competition in third season of Governor’s Cup
CEBU Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive director Ramil Abing is satisfied with the outcome of the 3rd season of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/ Municipalities Basketball Tournament, which wrapped up at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym on Saturday, May 11.
“I think we had a good season this year. I’m totally happy with the success of the event. We are thankful for the participating cities and municipalities and also for the support of Gov. Junjun Davide and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale,” said Abing after the championship game between Talisay City Aquastars and Mandaue City Ballers.
Talisay City defeated Mandaue City, 74-69, in Game 3 to snag back-to-back titles in the province-wide grassroots tournament organized by the CPSC and the Provincial Government for the Under-21 players.
Abing said the championship series between the two contenders made this season more exciting. The third season also saw improvements when it came to the competition level.
“As far as coaching, the teams hired competitive coaches and it made the competition better,” he said. “The league has improved when you compare it to the first and second seasons.”
Organizers also introduced a new format for this season. The teams were bracketed based on their districts. The opening ceremony was held simultaneously in seven districts.
“The new format in bracketing and the simultaneous opening proved to be a good idea,” said Abing.
The overall champion Talisay City bagged the P500,000 cash prize; first runner-up Mandaue City won P300,000; second runner-up Balamban Shipbuilders pocketed P200,000; and third runner-up Minglanilla Archangels snagged P100,000.
Aside from cash prizes for the top four teams, the top two teams in every district also won P100,000 and P50,000, respectively. /
