LABELLA’S GOAL: A READING CENTER IN EVERY VILLAGE

STUDENTS in Cebu City would no longer have to spend money to go to coffee shops to study once the City Government constructs the barangay reading centers.

The City Government will put up barangay reading centers in strategic areas near the universities in Barangays Talamban, Mabolo and Pardo, and one mountain barangay.

Mayor Edgardo Labella noticed the fad among students to study in coffee shops instead of their homes or boarding houses.

“We’re looking for places to build additional reading centers, especially in strategic places near the universities,” said Labella.

He said it’s his administration’s goal to build numerous reading centers and if possible, build one in each of the 80 barangays.

The mayor has directed City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. to look for sites where the centers can be constructed.

Aside from the students, Labella also wants the reading centers to accommodate those reviewing for board exams and the civil service exams.

“As much as possible, we will fill up all the vacant positions of the City Government. So for those who will be taking the civil service exam, they can study there,” he said.

The barangay reading centers will complement the Cebu City Public Library, which is open 24 hours a day.

During the launching and opening of the international book fair the Big Bad Wolf on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, Labella talked with the book fair owners, who pledged to donate some books for the reading centers.

Labella said they are also open to purchasing books from the latter in bulk for an affordable price. /
