Zonta Club taps youth in gender equality, women empowerment movement

-

A GLOBAL organization of professionals empowering women worldwide has renewed its call for youngsters to join in the fight for gender equality.

Philippine Commission on Women chairperson Rhodora Bucoy said members of the Zonta Club should “pass on the torch” to youngsters, especially girls.

“We should engage the young women, the young people to be part of what we call gender equality… Engage your children, your sisters, the younger women and train them to carry on our struggle for gender equality,” Bucoy said.

Bucoy was the plenary speaker in a recent meeting organized by the Zonta International District 17, Area 3.

Her discussion revolved around “Interacting, Innovating, Immersing in the UN (United Nations) Platform of Action for Women: Towards an Equal Future.” Her exceptional track record in the women empowerment movement landed her an honorary membership in Zonta Clubs of Cebu 1 and 2.

She was installed by club presidents Minnie Yuvienco and Marilou Cañizares.

The meeting for the biennium 2018 to 2020 was attended by 150 delegates hailing from Visayas and Mindanao, officers of District 17 and board and area directors from other southeast Asian countries.

Zonta Club presidents also presented a progress report on their part in the drive for women empowerment.

The reports highlighted projects that contribute to the advancement of women’s rights in their respective communities, efforts to end teenage pregnancy, early child marriage and violence against women and children concerns.
