NEW BATAAN, Compostela Valley Province – The Civil Service Commission (CSC) bestowed a posthumous award to a midwife who served her constituents who were injured during the wrath of Typhoon ‘Pablo’ on December 4, 2012.

The posthumous award was conferred to Aida Sacatani Barrete, a midwife of the Municipal Government of New Bataan.

The CSC granted a onetime financial assistance worth P100,000 and a scholarship program to the immediate family of Barrete.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Municipal Hall Lobby of New Bataan on May 6.

The CSC said Barrete was treating residents who were injured by the onslaught of typhoon Pablo on December 4, 2012 when a landslide hit Andap Barangay Health Center where she was at together with her husband and two children.

There was no trace of the health center and nearby structures after the area was hit by huge boulders and mud.

The CSC, through the approved CSC Resolution No. 1302553 dated November 29, 2013, otherwise known as the Implementing Guidelines on Pamanang Lingkod Bayani, gives a tribute to civilian public servants who displayed the characters of a bayani in the name of pub- lic service were the government employees died in the line of duty.

CSC assistant regional director Cyril Nathan SM. Eamiguel said Barrete is considered as a “lingkod bayani” not because she died while in the line of service but because “she gave her life to the service.”

“We don’t know what was coursing through her mind at the time of Typhoon Pablo was rampaging through Brgy. Andap but her actions would show that she stayed put to care for her patients. Lingkod Bayani is not about dying but about commitment to public service above one’s personal interest,” he said.

“Today we honor her commitment and sacrifice for public service. Her death would not be in vain if we allow her story to kindle in our hearts the same dedication and commitment. You can just imagine the kind of government service we would have if all civil servants possess and demonstrate the same qualities as Aida, there would be no PDAF Scam or any other corrupt practice,” he added.

During the program, a Plaque of Recognition was also given to Carlos Sacatani, the brother of the late Barrete.

Sacatani said he is very grateful and happy that the CSC recognizes her sister’s heroism as a dedicated employee.
