Amazona, Delos Santos capture tennis crowns

NATIONAL University (NU) player Jeleardo Amazona lived up to his billing to capture the men's title of the just-concluded National Students Championsh­ips Qualifying Try-outs Graham C. Lim Classic Cup held at the Ecoland Phase 4 Tennis Club courts.

Amazona of Banaybanay, Davao Oriental whipped University of Mindanao (UM) bet Jonathan Palac, 6-4, 6-1, in their titular showdown sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Associatio­n (Philta).

Sharyl Mae delos Santos of Holy Trinity College of General Santos City, for her part, captured the women's crown after eking out a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Doriz Jane Bagohin of the University of Mindanao, 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.

Philta regional vice-president for Mindanao Juanito "Titong" Cansino, Jr. said Amazona and Delos Santos will represent the country to the 29th Summer Universiad­e slated August 19 to 30 in Chinese Taipei in an allexpense paid trip by Federation of School Sports Associatio­n of the Philippine­s (Fessap).

San Miguel Corporatio­n, Mega World and Longmarch Tyre are backers of the tournament.

Amazona, who represente­d Davao City to the 9th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games held in Samarinda, East Kalimantan in Indonesia, demolished Jay Kabigting of the University of Mindanao (UM) 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals while Palac eliminated Reagan Sorima of the Notre Dame of Marbel University.

Delos Santos ousted Jhullie Elle of UM in the semifinals.

A total of 48 entries competed in the netfest.MLSA
