City wins 4 golds in basketball, futsal

MATI CITY, Davao Oriental-- The Davao City Durians elementary and secondary boys basketball team posted contrastin­g wins to clinch the gold medals in their respective divisions at the close of the Davao Regional Athletic Associatio­n (Davraa) Meet 2017 at the Davao Oriental State College Science and Technology (DOSCST) Gym here.

The elementary boys team escaped past Tagum City Tagumpay, 104-100, via overtime to clinch the gold Thursday evening.

Tagum erased Davao City's 18-point lead, tying the match at 85-all at the end of regulation. But the Dabawenyos recovered to secure the win.

Eimrod Rodulfa canned seven points including a crucial triple in the five-minute extension for a total of 23.

Canja and Ho, meanwhile, added 21 and 16 points, respective­ly.

Coach Harry Hipolito, in an interview with Sun. Star Davao, said, "I give all credit to the boys who played their hearts out. Di ko na talaga alam anong gagawin ko kanina but we are very thankful that we made it to the Palaro," the neophyte coach said, adding that they will just enjoy the moment and will resume practice when they go home to Davao City.

In the secondary boys division, Nestor "Tating" Sorrosa-coached Davao City team eked out a 117-91 victory over Tagum City Tagumpay yesterday.

The Durians leaned on the services of Aljay Alloso who erupted with game-high 21 points and Axel Doromal who sank 19. Teammates Kent Santillan and Vince Petdeo Cuajao accounted for 15 and 13 points, respective­ly.

John Kelvin Amora and Angeles, however, were limited with eight points each but took charge on the defensive end down the stretch.

Sorrosa, in a separate interview, said the players need to gel to improve their chemistry considerin­g that they are obliged to take players from the runnerup squad.

Meanwhile, the Davao City Durians cagebelles defeated Davao Oriental, 77-64, at Barangay Matiao covered court here to also annex the secondary girls gold.

Davao City also pocketed the secondary girls futsal gold by nipping Compostela Valley, 5-4, at the Barangay Central court.

Futsal coach Rachelle "Ching" delos Reyes, said she told the athletes to work hard to win the title.

"Attack and defend as team and play as a team, Kung gusto nila mudaug trabahuon nila," she said.

She also hopes that the athletes from the runnerup teams will be able to adjust in their system.
