US program for autism to be introduced here

-

THE Autism Treatment Center of America (ATCA) will bring the Son-Rise Program in Davao City through the “Autism Help: Parent Sharing” set on May 6 at the Audio Visual Room of San Pedro College.

The ATCA is a worldwide teaching center for The Son-Rise Program, a treatment for children and adults challenged with Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger’s Syndrome, and other developmental difficulties.

“There will be four families who will be sharing about how effective the program is,” Myr Tinapay, lead convener of the Davao-leg sharing activity, who is also a mother of a child challenged with Autism.

She said, the program, has helped parents encourage their children with autism to look into people’s eyes, use speech not tantrums to communicate, increase interactive attention span and become more flexible.

“Autism does not have to be a life sentence. This is what a mother of an autistic child learns in the autism lane. With this, parents can learn simple, yet effective SonRise strategies that have helped parents encourage their children with Autism to look at them, use verbal and non-verbal communication, interact socially and become more flexible,” Tinapay added.

Asked about the status of autism awareness in Davao City, Tinapay was quick to add that the level of awareness here about autism is low.

She emphasized that the activity is seen to raise awareness and enable the community understand what are the needs of the families with autism challenged child.

The Son-Rise Program was originated in 1974 by parents, Barry Neil Kaufman (best-selling author, Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues) and Samahria Lyte Kaufman for their son. The treatment and educational model has changed the way children with Autism are helped worldwide.
