After 2 years of congesting traffic. bridge to be finished by mid-June

THE Davao River Bridge widening project of the Department of Works and Highways Davao Region (DPWH 11) connecting Ma-a and Buhangin along the Carlos P. Garcia Highway (Diversion Road) will finally be completed by second week of June this year, two years since it started and has been causing daily traffic pile-up.

At least that is what DPWH 11 Chief Information Officer Dean Ortiz said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, saying the widening project took two years to complete due

to repeated soil collapse that required project plan revisions.

In an advisory released by DPWH Davao yesterday, May 23, the Davao River Bridge was temporarily closed to all motorists from midnight to 6 a.m. today, May 24, for the installation of girders or steel beams.

Ortiz said the installation was supposed to have been done last May 21, Sunday, but they had to cancel the construction due to bad weather.

"We have already installed two girders last Sunday. So for tonight, we have to continue installing six more girders to complete the eight-girder requirement," Ortiz said.

After the establishment of girders, Ortiz added that they will immediately continue with the road pavement as the last step of the widening project before its official completion this June.

He said they will be doing their best to avoid any technical and mechanical issues that may again cause delays.

The Davao City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) has been assisting motorists on the alternative routes available around Diversion road, but traffic pile-up continues as the alternative routes are narrow and just as congested. BSC
