PSC-backed brgy sports education seminar underway

DAVAO CITY – Some 100 officials from 30 barangays of Davao City and other stakeholde­rs will be on hand as the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)-backed Barangay Sports Education seminar unwraps at 9 a.m. today at The Royal Mandaya Hotel here.

Liga ng mga Barangay president and Davao City Councilor January Duterte will welcome participan­ts while PSC Commission­er Charles Raymond A. Maxey will tackle the PSC/LGU's role in Barangay Sports Program in Achieving National Goals to Develop a Healthy and Peaceful Citizenry.

Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) Davao del Norte coordinato­r Giovanni Gulanes, meanwhile, will discuss the Model LGU with Healthy and Funcitiona­l Sports Program even as Antonio Lumactod will talk on Evolving Spirituali­ty in Sports.

The Sports for Peace Core Group of Serge Opena, Gemima Valderama and Ed Fernandez will conduct a Workshop on Strengthen­ing the Barangay Sports Program.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez will also be in attendance in the seminar that serves as pre-event of the Summer Children's Games 2017, a component of the PSC's Sports for Peace Program that is a brainchild of Ramirez. The Games will kick off at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, at the Rizal Park. The 30 barangays, representi­ng the three congressio­nal districts of the city, will field two teams each in the boys 12-under 3-on-3 basketball, one team each for girls 12-under volleyball and 10 participan­ts each for Larong Pinoy.

Games will be played at the Rizal Park, Davao City Police Office court and Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

Mildred Untalan, chief-of-staff of Councilor Duterte, earlier said that they encouraged the barangays to include out-ofschool youth and children in conflict with the law (CICL) in their respective teams.PSI
