DCWD welcomes new scholars

-

DAVAO City Water District (DCWD) has 16 partner schools for its elementary scholarship and five new tribal college scholars for the school year 2017-2018.

For the elementary scholarship, DCWD partners with 16 elementary schools within Malagos, Mt. Talomo-Lipadas, and Mt. Tipolog-Tamugan watersheds, namely Baguio Central, Baracayo, Bartolome, Cadalian, Gumalang, Lacson, Malagos, Malalan, Tambobong, Tamugan, Tawan-Tawan, Tungkalan, Wines, Quezon, Marilog, and Gatungan for its Tulong Aral ng DCWD. Through this scholarship, the top 10 performing grades five and six students in English, Math, and Science will receive PhP200 for every grading period as motivation to excel and sustain their academic performance throughout the school year. Last school year, a total of 1,277 top performing students in DCWD’s 13 partner elementary schools in the uplands received this incentive.

For DCWD’s College Scholarship for Indigenous Peoples, there are five incoming tribal scholars who will be enrolled in Public Administration, Community Development, Agricultural Business, or Business Administration courses at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP). As scholars, they are entitled to free tuition and miscellaneous fees every semester and monthly uniform, textbook, transportation, meal, and housing allowances and will need to maintain a weighted point average of 80 every semester.

With the incoming scholars, DCWD now supports a total of 17 indigenous students from Toril, Tugbok, Baguio, Calinan, and Marilog districts. Two scholars are expected to graduate from USEP in June 2017. DCWD has another college scholarship program for academic excellence, which supports two would-be fifth year Civil Engineering students in USEP.

All DCWD scholars are organized under the WATER Ambassador program, which hones the scholars to become Wellrounded, Action-Driven, Tenacious, Environmentconscious, Responsible citizens through learning and peer support interventions such as environmental education, teambuilding, counseling and mentoring, and school-parent visitation.

The college and elementary scholarships are part of DCWD’s Corporate Social Responsibility with the objective to help the communities within the watersheds, where Davao City water comes from, attain their right to education. Jamae G. Dela Cruz/DCWD
