Lea Salonga returns to broadway

The news was confirmed by the Tony winner herself through a tweet sharing the report of the official announcement.

"I have been keeping this for months! So excited to be returning to Broadway this fall in one of my favorite shows," she wrote on social media.

Salonga, one of the coaches of “The Voice of the Philippines”, will be part of the revival of “Once on This Island” as Erzulie, the goddess of love, along with Merle Dandridge, Quentin Earl Darrington and Alex Newell.

Set to officially open on December 3, the musical will be directed by Michael Arden and choreographed by Camille Brown.

In an article on Broadway World’s official website, Arden was quoted to have said: "In casting the Gods that inhabit our island, it became imperative for me to break expectations and stretch beyond the bounds in which Gods are traditionally represented.”

“It felt important that young people watching our production see themselves reflected back from the stage at them. The Gods are simply that: Gods. They are not bound by gender, race, sexuality or being human at all. I'm so very pleased to be collaborating with these four artists exploring the important and timely themes of this musical through their unique and incredible abilities," he added.

Broadway World said “Once on this Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. When their divided cultures threaten to keep them apart, Ti Moune, guided by the island gods, sets out on a remarkable quest to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

Written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the musical is based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy.
