- By Jennie P. Arado

JAPANESE businessmen had expressed interest in investing in sourcing out raw materials for feeds from Davao City during their meeting with the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center (DCIPC).

According to DCIPC officer-in-charge Lemuel Ortonio, there were a number of Japanese businessmen, headed by the general manager of a Japanese Chamber of Commerce, who came to DCIPC to discuss the priority industry for investments in the city.

“Their interest is on agriculture. They’ll be coming back to Davao City to explore even more and to acquire more information in terms of agriculture. They are looking for raw materials that they can use for their finished product which is the feeds,” said Ortonio adding that the investors are particularly looking for pineapple crowns that they use as one of the raw materials for their feeds, more specifically pet foods.

Initially, the group has asked for DCIPC’s assistance to conduct an industry tour in agricultural plantations in the city where they can source out raw materials. Tentatively, the group will be coming back to Davao City on September.

“They also asked on the investment opportunities in Davao City so we discussed with them briefly our 10 preferred investment areas for them to disseminate the information. They also have a few members in their chamber that are interested in Davao City, specifically,” Ortonio said.

Currently, the Japanese delegates are still on their exploratory stages while studying the business and industry climate of Davao City.

Last April, it was reported that two groups of Japanese businessmen had also reached out with DCIPC expressing interest on investment in areas of healthcare and consulting firm in partnership with the city government and other private institutions. The other delegation was interested on organizing business missions, bringing Dabawenyo delegates to Japan.
