Durians focus on Get Into Rugby
AFTER winning a back-toback title in the shield division of the recent 14th FatBoy 10 Rugby Tournament at Clark Air base, Pam pan ga, the Davao Durians Rugby Football Club (DDRFC) will take a breather and focus on inspiring children to join the Get Into Rugby (GIR) program.
The team's next competition is set in November.
DDRFC playing coach Hilton Soberano, who were among the guests in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the Food Cove function hall of NCCC Mall Davao, said they fought hard to win the title.
"Gusto din namin makita ng mga bata na nanalo kami pagdating sa labas na competitions," Soberano, who was accompanied by DDRFC team captain Le Allen Lara, said. She added that they plan to maintain and improve the team to compete in a higher division.
"We plan to bring more juniors para maka experience silang maglaro kasi yan yung medyo kulang sa Mindanao. Sa Manila kasi regularly naglalaro sila at tayo we are trying our best to have at least once a month meron (competition)," he added.
Soberano also said that the Durians will also share their part in the upcoming GIR coaches training slated in October before preparing for Cebu 10’s and Philippine National Games (PNG).
Soberano and Lara shared their experiences during the international event where they had to play quick and smart.
"It was a very tight game from the start per on id aug lang jud sila (they won) in terms of size and experience. Pero overall sa among performance from the Taipei Baboons to Manila Nomads kay naa ang pride sa among dula (we had the pride to play)," Lara said,
Soberano, however, assessed that they had a better structure and successful plays this year from last year.
