Warriors annihilate Hungry Apes 71-47

MYSTIC Water Philippine­s (MWP) Warriors, Davao Group and Team Mahiwaga eked out victories in yesterday's opener of the Catalunan Grande Basketball League (CGBL) Open basketball tournament held at the Davao City Recreation Center.

MWP, bannered by Assumption College of Davao (ACD) Warriors, scored a blowout 71-47 victory over Hungry Apes in their debut game of the event backed by The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao San EI Trading, Bearing Center and Machinery Inc., Mahugani Security Agency and The City Government of Davao.

AJ Royo paced the Warriors with 13 points including three triples while BJ Sumugat and Gabriel Lazaraga made an identical 12 points.

Arnold Heje also added 10 points even as Leonard Salvame chipped in seven points.

Sid Cesar Sotto, for his part, powered the Hungry Apes with his 24-point output including four three-pointers in a losing game.

The Davao Group, for its part, downed Team Mahiwaga 66-57, behind the heroics of Jed Roxas who sizzled 24 points.

Kenny Lodinia also added 12 points for the winning team.

Team Mahiwaga, however, leaned on the service of latecomer Bong Marata who scored 16 points in the last five minutes of the regulation.

But Mahiwaga bounced back by beating Emar Human and Environmen­tal College (EHEC) Red Stags 75-51, in their second game the same day.

Ali Galacio, who was silent during their game against Davao Group, erupted 19 points which was braced by Marata's 15 points to secure the win.

The event sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will resume next Sunday in a still undetermin­ed venue.
