DJA set for 3X3 finals

- By Adam B. Morrell

AFTER three years, the Davao Jones Academy (DJA) Spunky will finally don the Region 11's colors to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3x3 National Finals Under 15 slated October 27 in Manila.

The DJA Spunky defeated the Holy Child College Davao (HCCD), Reds 12-8, in the recent city eliminations to secure an all-expense paid trip to the national finals.

"I'm speechless. After 14 years of coaching in Davao Jones Academy, maka champion lang ang team parang dream come true na," DJA head coach Rael Diaz in yesterday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the NCCC Mall Food Cove function hall. He was joined by assistant coach Jimmy Colicot.

Diaz recalled failing in their first attempt in 2015 then they settled runner-up last year to two-time champion Assumption College of Davao (ACD) Warroirs.

But Diaz has a great vision for his players Askiah Jhon Echavia, Jaime Batoon, Clark Xavier Abracia and Nico Cabalhin - all veterans of the Palarong Pambansa and other tournaments.

“Iba to sila (his players), talagang season na season ang team na ito pag dating sa 15 and under,” Diaz said, adding that he has high hopes on the team's chances in Manila

Colicot, for his part, said they have been preparing for bigger opponents and will lean on their speed.

“Yung mga players kasi naming di gaanong matatangkad so nag focus kami sa speed at shooting pati na rin sa condition para maka sustain,” Colicot said, considering that 3-on-3 is different from the regular basketball.

DJA team will leave on October 26.
