UPMin tops debate tilt

MINDANAO INTERNATIO­NAL HUMANITARI­AN LAW

THE University of the Philippine­s Mindanao Team B bagged their first ever championsh­ip trophy after outshining Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan University) in the grand finals of the Mindanao Internatio­nal Humanitari­an Law Debates last October 15, 2017 at The Royal Mandaya Hotel of Davao City.

UP Mindanao B is composed of debaters Karl Tristan Butalid (IVBA Anthropolo­gy), Andres Karl Segovia (IV- BA Communicat­ion Arts) and Bryle Matthew Bacatan (III- BA Food Technology) on side government competing on the motion “This house regrets the airstrikes in Marawi”.

Andres Karl Segovia, as the Deputy Leader of Opposition was hailed as the best speaker with his extensive discussion on the collateral damage of the emerging war, the harms of air strikes on the Meranaws both internal and external and the narrative it sends to the people that the state as the primary actor of the killings through the air strikes.

Karl Tristan Butalid also emerged as the tournament’s 9th best speaker with a total speaker score of 306. Tin Villanueva (IV- BA Communicat­ion Arts) was hailed as 6th best adjudicato­r while Hyacinth Tiffany Jungco (IV- BA Communicat­ion Arts) come up to be a breaking adjudicato­r.

Other competing debaters were Nissa Mariel Caderao (III- BS Agribusine­ss Economics), Sarika Rey (III- BA English) and Gloriline Deximo (III- BA Agribusine­ss Economics) of UPMin C; and Gaily Vani Labasano (IV- BS Biology) as adjudicato­r.

Mindanao Internatio­nal Humanitari­an Law debates is sponsored by the Philippine Red Cross Davao City Chapter.
