Samal Island celebrates Elderly Week
ISLAND Garden City of Samal -- Around 300 Senior Citizens in Samal Island joined the Elderly Week Celebration at the Samal Cultural Gymnasium last October 9, 2017.
The highlight of this year’s celebration was the wedding of Lito Marasigan, 60-year-old, and Lorna Guevarra, 67-year-old, from Barangay Cawag.
It was made possible with the help and support of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Office of the Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA), and Island Garden City of Samal Federation of Senior Citizen Association (Igacos-Fesca).
With the theme “Pagkilala sa Kakayahan, Ambag at Paglahok ng Nakakatanda sa Lipunan", it is a yearly celebration in recognition of the older person’s contribution in the society. Under the Republic Act 9994, also known as the Expanded Act of Senior Citizen 2010, the state should motivate and encourage senior citizens to the nation building and established measures whereby their contributions are maximized.
“This is your day, so enjoy. I am happy for our Senior Citizen are still active and my only request to our Lolos and Lolas is to guide and advice our youth for this is all they need," said City Mayor Al David T. Uy.
Different competitions were prepared to entertain the participants from ballroom dancing, curacha, vocal solo, dama, dart, and chess.
The winners of these competition had competed last October 10, 2017 at the RDR Gym Capitol, Tagum City were they bagged the 2nd Place in ballroom dancing, curacha, vocal solo, and dart (women), and 1st Place for the Dart (men).
