Unesco holds Youth Funshop

MANILA - The Philippine Sports Commission together with the Philippine Sports Institute tied-up with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to hold the first ‘Sport and the SGDs Youth Funshop’ at the Philsports Complex yesterday.

The three-day workshop will focus on strengthening of sports policies and strategies in the countries represented by the 29 international delegates present.

This is in alignment with the ‘The Kazan Action Plan’ adapted by Unesco’s Sixth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VI) held in Russia in July this year.

Irakli Khodeli, Head of Social and Sciences Unit in Unesco-Jakarta said that “these programs have greater impact on youth, especially in the Philippines where interesting angles of preventing violent extremism is present.”

This plan is also directly aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by Unesco that seeks “to maximize the impact of sport at the community level,” something that PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez have been striving to spread across the country, through grassroots sports development. “I believe that sports will be the answer to poverty in the Philippines. It is for this reason that the PSC values the Filipino children. We believe that sports will bring a better future for our country,” Ramirez said in his opening statement.
