PSI to hold talks on sports science

DUMAGUETE – The Philippine Sports Institute will hold a series of sports science talks coinciding with the Batang Pinoy Games Visayas regionals organized, which goes full blast on Saturday at the Lamberto Macias Sports Center and nearby venues here.

To be held at the Foundation University campus beginning on Sunday, the series will cover five subjects, according to PSI deputy director for grassroots Salvador Marlon Malbog IV, a former basketball coach at the Ateneo de Davao University.

“We will have courses in first aid, sports nutrition, performanc­e analysis among children, maximizing performanc­e using movement efficiency screening and sports nutrition,” Malbog said of the four-day course open for free to coaches and participan­ts of the weeklong Batang Pinoy Visayas regionals.

He added that they have invited speakers who are experts in these respective areas that play an important role in enhancing the performanc­e of athletes, whether beginners or at the elite level.

“At the end of these series of sports science talks, we hope that these coaches will be able to impart what they learned to their young athletes so they can perform even better,” Malbog said, adding that the talks would be repeated for those who cannot attend them while their athletes are competing.

On the other hand, hostilitie­s in the youth sportsfest organized by Philippine Sports Commission start today with the centerpiec­e sports track and field at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Stadium and swimming at the Lorenzo G. Teves Memorial Aqua Center.

Aside from athletics and swimming, other sports in the meet are archery, a favorite discipline in this scenic seaport city, arnis, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, dancesport, karatedo, lawn tennis, pencaksila­t, softball, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and beach volleyball.
